ABOUT  STUDENTS  TRAINED  BY  THE  MASTER

A complete list of my students would rather difficult and a trifle awkward to compile , as I was more of a close friend and something of a mentor figure to most of the top players around me , during my playing days in 1972 - 1993 - It would not be proper on my part to term them as my "students" as we were all learning about chess together , in some way or the other - I had the pleasure and privilege of enjoying the intellectual company of many top players of various age groups , spread out all over the country and the list of players that follows pertains only to those I took on as my students after 1993 - I realize that a coach will have many students and conversely a student too can have many coaches ,  especially at different developing stages of his or her chess career path - I hope that the other coaches (past or present) of the players mentioned below will not mind the fact that I have dealt with their wards - It has become quite common for players to be brought to me for what is usually termed as "endgame brush up" -  Naturally my coaching is not confined to just the endgame and I have to teach other topics like openings , middle game tactics & strategy , game plans , psychology and rival based preparation too - After all , we teach all students the same way and the same matter but everyone does not succeed to the same degree - So I think that ultimately the entire credit for a player's success , should go mainly to the player for tireless efforts put in over the years and also partly to the supporting factors like parents , sponsors , associations, coaches , etc  -  Raja Ravi Sekhar -

List of Group – 1 starts :

1 .  01 - B . Adhiban (Chennai - Tamil Nadu - India ) (Born 1992 and son of B. Bhaskaran) I could not claim to have spent much time with this bright boy from Chennai and he is a result of the excellent playing and learning atmosphere you get in the city where V.Anand lives - Adhiban plays well and needs to notch up something substantial at the National or Asian levels soon - I am happy to add that Adhiban won the Under-13 National at  Calcutta in December 2005 rather convincingly with a start of 8.5/9 and ending up unbeaten with 10/11- He also ended up in a triple tie for the top spot with 6.5/9 at the Under-14 Asian at Teheran in July 2006 where he bagged the silver medal on tiebreak - Adhiban must now work hard to carve out a high position for himself in the forthcoming Under-14 World event at Georgia towards the end of 2006 - This means that Adhiban moves to the top group in our listings - I must add here that Adhiban has become very consistent in finding his way to the top positions in many major events held during 2006-2007- He has a very bright future if he keeps working hard at it - Very likely to pick up many more titles and distinctions in due course of time - Some wise relation of his appears to be doing an excellent job of playing a good companion and sort of mentor too -

1 . 02  - Akshayraj Kore (Pune - Maharashtra - India ) (Born 1988 and son of Mr. Ashok . R.  Kore) Has come to me only a few times but has made a lot of progress by doing well at National and Asian meets - Was also a member of the successful Indian team to the students Olympiad abroad - Steadily improving his elo rating too -

1 . 03 - Anjanaa . N . Sowjanyaa (Chennai - Tamil Nadu - India) (Born 01-02-1990 and daughter of Mr.K.V.Nagarajan, Govt.) Current elo rating as on 01-10-2005 = 1969 - Did quite well to fight with the dangerous Andhra girls to emerge as runner-up in the Under-13 Girls Nationals at Ahmedabad 2004 but missed her chances in both the World and Asian Under-14 girls events that year -  Has also performed well in various State and National events but lying low now in pursuit of academic studies quite earnestly -

1.04 - Antonio Viani D'Cunha (Mangalore - Karnataka - India) (Born 1995 and son of Mr.D'Cunha and Mrs.Lydia) Just a few sessions with me and has trained earlier at Mangalore - Did well to be the runner - up behind Sahaj Grover in the Under-9 Nationals at Ahmedabad a couple of years back in Dec 2004 - Has missed his way in a few events after figuring consistently on the top boards - Did quite well in the recently concluded Under-11 Nationals at Chennai in late 2006 but missed his chances in the last round to slip down - A good player and careful too but must learn to control his anxiety and nerves while under pressure - One of the best performers from his home state of Karnataka -

1 . 04 - M . Arjun Vishnuvardhan (Trivandrum -  Kerala -  India) (Born 21-08-1990 and 1st son of Mr. C.R. Manoj ) Current elo rating as on 01-10-2005 = 2190  Won a few top placings in the British championhips Under-10 through Under-14 events a few years back after training with me in 2001-  Somehow he has stayed away from the mainstream cycles of National championships and other major events held within India but I understand that he and his younger brother M.Gowrishankar are globe trotting youngsters doing well for themselves -  Plays well and must keep going to progress -

1 . 05 - R . Ashwath (Chennai - Tamil Nadu - India) (Born 1991 and son of Mr. K. Raja ,  industrialist & Mrs.Anitha) Talented Ashwath actually deserves very much to be somewhere high in Group-1 -  Quite theoretical in his approach to openings Ashwath is at the same time quite sharp in his tactical play -  He narrowly missed a medal in the Under-12 Asian at Calicut in 2003 by ending up in a tie for 3rd to 5th and also had a good performance in the World Junior at Cochin 2004 where he finished ahead of many senior competitors - Getting "noticed" there was only the start as his recent excellent performance of coming in the top 20 in the recently concluded National-B senior event at Delhi 2005 with  a clear gain of over 50 elo points has attracted even the attention of the discerning media -  Ashwath's convincing exploits in internet blitz circles and competitions have also earned for him the praise and admiration of top players all over the world -  We may indeed expect Ashwath to bag many medals, championships etc in the years to come - This is what I wrote earlier and I am happy to add here that Ashwath has proved his mettle by winning the Tamil Nadu state championship Under-15 sub juniors with a clean score of 9.5/11 unbeaten with 8 winsa and 3 draws in July 2006 - With an identical score he went on to win in the very next month the National Sub junior championship at Visakhapatnam - It only remains for him to score more medals , norms and keep going forward - Plays a steady theoretical game with a good balanced blend of positional and tactical ideas -

1 . 06 - U . Ashwini (Chennai - Tamil Nadu - India) (Born 1998 perhaps and daughter of Mr.P.N.S. Udhayasuriyan) Has finished as runner-up last year in her age group Tamil Nadu state championship and also taken part in Nationals - Has been trained in Chennai chess circles and had a session with me once at Bangalore - Smart kid but needs to work hard on her openings -  Made a major breakthrough in 2006 by bagging the bronze medal in Under-8 Asian at Teheran - Narrowly missed out at the World Under-8 event at Georgia the same year -

1 . 07 - Ashwin Jayaram (Chennai – Tamil Nadu – India ) (Born 14-08-1990 and son of Mr.Jayaram and Mrs.Meena ) Current elo rating as on 01-10-2005 = 2239  Has been performing well in state and national events – major breakthrough when he won the fide rated event at Dindigul last year ahead of several senior competitors – Prefers aggressive openings and quite chess literate + computer savvy too –

1 . 08  – Bhakthi Kulkarni (Goa – India) (Born 1991 and daughter of Mr.Pradeep Kulkarni (bank) Probably the strongest player from her home state of Goa and has overhauled many senior players from her state – Made a big breakthrough by finishing as the runner-up in the U-13 Girls Nationals at Vijayawada last year  - She is rather likely to make many medals in the future as her calculations are razor sharp and openings improving steadily - I must add here that subsequently Bhakthi has made a great deal of headway by winning medals at the Asian events at New Delhi 2005 and Teheran 2006 -

1 . 08 -  Chitra  Sridhar (Bangalore – Karnataka – India ) (Born 1984 and daughter of Mr. S. Sridhar (state govt) I could not really claim to have done much for Chitra as she was mainly moulded by her father who had great passion for the game and admiration for its skilled exponents – I do recall that Chitra had great fondness for the Marshall attack and made her mark quite early by winning the Under-8 Nationals in 1992 – She won the Rapid Nationals of her age group thrice in succession and even scored the bronze medal for India in the world rapid events at France – A student of Bishop Cottons she must have gone into professional courses by now –

1 . 09  - J . Deepan Chakravarthy (Madurai - Tamil Nadu - India) (Born 1987 and son of Mrs.Murugeswari , aquarium business) Deepan had acquired a great deal of middle game experience by playing in many tournaments before he came to me around 2000 or so -  I only had to point the path towards study and usage of modern opening lines- Deepam went on to win a few Nationals, picked up a few Asian medals, completed his IM title and also notched up GM norms - However his sponsorship contract with WIPRO has expired and he is still on the lookout for a sponsor -  It only remains for him to score the remaining norm and elevate his elo rating to the required plateau specified by FIDE in order to get the title of Grandmaster -  In recent years he has also made his presence felt in the senior National-A circles and is also close to picking up a medal in the U-16-18 World championships - I must add add here that Deepan has become a grandmaster and is knocking on the doors to the coveted top six positions of Indian chess -

1 . 10 - C . Delphin (Madurai - Tamil Nadu - India ) (Born 1986 and daughter of  Mr. A. Chelladorai ) Delphin has a good aggressive style and plays a standard theoretical game - She has had many achievements at the state, Nationals and Asian levels in numerous competitions over the years - She started early and has been in the scene for a long time - She must break her way into the National-A women field and also gun for norms - She can do it if she wants to -

1 . 11 - Dipanjan Das (Calcutta - West Bengal - India) (Born 1988 perhaps ) Dipanjan became famous by winning the British championship in perhaps the under-10 category and I recall that his photo appeared shortly thereafter on the cover page of the Indian chess magazine "Chess Mate" - He had come down to Bangalore on a couple of occasions for chess training and was fairly active during that period - Not that active these days -

1 . 12  - Dhyani . B . Dave (Ahmedabad - Gujarat - India) (Born 1991 and daughter of Mr.Bharatbhai Dave and Mrs.Kiran Dave ) Has been consistent in picking up medals at the Asian and Commonwealth events - Well prepared openings and business like in the middle game -  Dhyani also had the distinction of being one of the very few junior sportmen to be honoured by the Gujarat State Govt. in the shape of their very CM Narendra Modi -

1 . 13 - Esha Karawade (Pune -  Maharashtra -  India) (Daughter of  Dr.Sanjay Karawade) I cannot claim much credit for the great success enjoyed by this talented girl from Pune -  I only had to do a bit of endgame brush up and suggestions etc - She has also won many Nationals, Asian medals and become a WGM. Her constant presence in the senior women - A championships and recent performance of 3rd place (bronze medal) in the World Junior girls 2004 at Cochin indicate that she will continue to be a major factor in Indian chess and at the International levels -  Quite recently in 2004/2005 she received the Chhatrapathi Award given by the Maharashtra Government for high excellence in sports -

1 . 14 - G. N. Gopal (Aluva -  Kerala -  India) (Born 1989 and son of Mr. B. Narayana Pillai) Trained with me during his early formative years - Did very well recently to come close in the top 20 at National-B Delhi 2005 -  Has won rapid and regular Nationals as well as Asian medals - Elo rating moving up steadily - Perhaps the most promising youngster from the state of Kerala - Plays standard theoretical lines - Making IM norms , winning rated events and all set to move up the line - Has become the first IM from Kerala by 2007 -

1 . 15 - M . Gowrishankar (Trivandrum -  Kerala -  India) (Born 1992 and 2nd son of Mr. C.R. Manoj ) Won the Under-7 Nationals by starting early at Aurangabad around 1999 and also won a few top placings in the British championhips Under-8 through Under-14 events a few years back after training with me in 2001. Somehow he has stayed away from the mainstream cycles of National championships and other major events held within India but I understand that he and his brother Arjun Vishnuvardhan are globe trotting youngsters doing well for themselves -  Mentally very alert and shrewd far beyond his years -  Good understanding of chess and likely to make major breakthroughs if he keeps at it

1 . 16 – Iswarya Shobana  (Salem – Tamil Nadu - India ) (Born 1988 and daughter of  Mrs.Jayanthi ) I have only had the chance on a couple of occasions to spend time with her to give some guidance as her training regime seems to have been with  the  Salem secretary Mr.Senthil and constant practice with his son  S. Nitin + T. Abhay  the son of the well known chess lover and DIG of Police Mr.Tamilselvan – Iswarya did well to win her age group Nationals at Ahmedabad , despite starting off with two draws and also won a Rapid National at Chandigarh – In recent times she has also qualified for the Women National –A and has thus stayed in the field of good performers -

1 . 17 -  J . E . 1 . 19 - Kruttika Nadig (Bangalore -  Karnataka -  India) (Born 1988 and daughter of Mrs.Devika Nadig) Kruttika has won many Nationals, Asian medals and also more or less completed her IWM title -  She has also been striking often for a top spot in recent years in the seniors women National-A championships and needs to work on her WGM norms -  Playing with a strong attacking style backed up by good calculations, Kruttika plays a standard theoretical game and ought to make quick progress over the next two years -  Her 4th place (missing the coveted medal by a whisker) in the recently concluded World Junior Girls event at Cochin 2004 has given a clear indication that she will be a major force to reckon with in Indian and International chess circles - Until recently she was a resident of Pune, playing for Maharashtra and is now a student of Jyothi Nivas College at Bangalore -

1 . 19  - P. Lakshmi Sahithi (Gudiwala - Andhra Pradesh - India ) (Born 1993 and daughter of  Sambasiva Rao (business) Comes from the same place in Andhra as the famous Koneru Humpy - Has won several Nationals and Asian medals in a rather convincing manner often with full scores like 9/9 or 7/7 etc - Plays very well when she is is full form with smooth flow and playing rhythm - Needs to adjust to changing fortunes over the board and make mental adjustments to keep playing well till the competition is over - Has missed out on world medals after rather promising starts but she is extremely talented and will eventually succeed in all her goals if she persists -

1 . 20 - G. Madhukiran (Vijayawada - Andhra Pradesh - India ) (Born 05 - 08 - 1994 and son of G.Muralidhar) Current elo rating as on 01-10-2005 = 2012 I have not had the chance to work much with this lad - He made a big mark by winning the Under-7 Nationals at Chennai in 2001 and has also shown some results in Gulf events but needs to make his presence felt in his age group events now - Would do better to broaden his opening repertoire -

1 . 21 - G. Madanasri (Vijayawada - Andhra Pradesh - India ) (Born 1993 and daughter of G.Muralidhar) I have not had the chance to work much with this girl who came very close to winning a medal in the world events where I think she finished 5th -Needs to make her presence felt in her age group events now - Would do better to broaden her opening repertoire -

1 . 22  - R . Mahima  (Madurai – Tamil Nadu – India ) (Born 1987 and daughter of Mr.B.Rajmohan) Mahima made headlines quite early by winning the National U-8 girls event in 1995 and her next good result came when she was the Runner-up behind Esha Karavade in the Nationals at Calcutta – Mahima has been playing regularly since then and needs to make her presence felt in a bigger way -

1 . 23 - J . Megha (Bangalore -  Karnataka -  India) (Born 1988 and daughter of R.Jayaram (Insurance) Megha is the cousin sister of Sunil Rangarajan and likewise performed very well in several state events for girls within Karnataka -  She also did very well to take the 3rd place in one of the Girls Nationals at Chennai a few years back which was perhaps her best result before she too pulled out to pursue her studies -

1 . 26 - Poobesh Anand (Madurai -  Tamil Nadu -  India) (Son of Mr. K.Selvaraj , Telecom.) I cannot claim to have done much work with Poobesh but his first National title (probably U-18 at Vijayawada a few years back) came in quite late and after he had picked up an Asian medal at Bikaner. He has also completed his IM title and plays a good theoretical game as most of his repertoire is often linked to the French GM Joel Lautier.

1 . 28 - K . Priyadharshan (Madurai - Tamil Nadu - India) (Born 1993 and son of A. S . Kannappan , LIC Insurance and Mrs. Meenakshi) A very alert, imaginative and tactical player, he started early and had to modernise his openings when he came to me a few years back -  Priyadharshan picked up the Silver medal at Calicut Asian Under-10 boys 2003 , the gold medal in Under-12 boys at Commonwealth Mumbai 2004 the bronze medal at Under-12 Asian Singapore, December 2004 and finally the gold medal at Under -12 Asian New Delhi 2005 - Quite consistent and serious, he has several targets more, ahead of him, to be achieved in the years to come -

1 . 29 - M. Priyadarshini (Madurai -  Tamil Nadu - India) (Born 1987 and daughter of  Mr. Manimaran  and Mrs.Vasanthi ) Was National Under-8 girls champion by starting off early and also bagged Asian medals-Became a rated player too with WIPRO sponsorship that followed but has sort of pulled out of the game to concentrate on academic studies -

1 . 30 - M . 1 . 37 - M . Satvik (Bangalore - Karnataka - India ) (Born 1998 and son of  Dr. R . Muralidhar (vascular surgeon) and Dr. K.Chandrika (gynaecologist) Current elo rating as on 01-10-2005 = 1955 -  For a brief period during late 2002 I had the pleasure of talking about chess and playing with little Satvik who is the younger brother of M.Suraj - Satvik is not docile as his name might suggest and is quite ambitious when he plays chess - Started off quite early , learning the game when he was just four years old and won the Under - 8 event recently at Sangli - Has had a lot exposure in rated events + various age group Nationals - Satvik is one of the very few in the world born in 1998 to actually have an elo rating - All the credit for these results  goes to his mom Dr.Chandrika and coach Arvind Shastry - A student of Poorna Pragna school (like his elder brother M.Suraj) Satvik is all set to win the Under-7 Karnataka State championship in 2005 -   He ought to go all out to win the Under-7 Nationals coming up at Aurangabad in November 2005 - He has achieved the distinction of bringing home for Karnataka , the bronze medal in the Under-8 Asian event at Teheran in 2006 -

1 . 37 - S . 1 . 40 - N . Srinath (Chennai - Tamil Nadu - India) (Born 1994 and son of Mr.C.L.Narayanan)(Insurance) Srinath is of course very well known today as the sportsman felicitated recently by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu,  Ms . J. Jayalalitha for his achievements in becoming both the Asian Under-10 Champion at Singapore in December 2004 and World Under-12 Champion at France in July 2005 - His success is due to his grooming in Chennai chess circles and all persistent steps taken by his father C.L.Narayanan and I cannot really claim to be more than a guiding factor to perfect his endgame and all round shape after his phenomenal results - Srinath has a lot of chess culture and is bubbling with information related to the game - I find it quite remarkable that someone so young evinces a lot of interest in top players of the past , their life history , style of play etc and perhaps this accounts for the resilience and fighting spirit shown by him with his back to the wall in crucial games - Srinath needs to keep working hard to perfect his opening theory and continue playing positively to earn more laurels in the years to come -

1 . 43 - Sunil Rangarajan (Bangalore -  Karnataka - India) (Born 1987 and son of Mr.R.Rangarajan, accountancy + music and Mrs.Vani, Syndicate Bank) Sunil was easily one of the most promising youngsters from Karnataka. His total and absolute domination of chess among children in Karnataka state was evident from the fact that he won innumerable state events in various age groups at Karnataka and was even in the top positions of Karnataka state seniors -  His major results came in winning the National Under-12 boys at Calcutta around 1999 and National Under-14 boys at Bangalore 2001 -  He has, since then, however withdrawn from active chess circles in favour of seriously pursuing his academic studies, with his heart set firmly on becoming a doctor -

Sunil's total and absolute domination of chess among children in Karnataka state was evident from the fact that he won innumerable state events in various age groups at Karnataka and was even in the top positions of Karnataka state seniors - Sunad did pay attention to whatever was taught to Sunil and his grasping power was very good in almost everything - He has always been in favour of seriously pursuing his academic studies, with his heart set firmly on becoming a doctor and super specialist - I do believe that Sunad will indeed excel at whatever he will attempt , even chess , if he would want to -
